Featured Country of Origin
Nicaragua

Like many of its Central American neighbors, Nicaragua has had its share of political problems. After the bloody Sandinista take-over in 1979 Nicaragua was left with 40,000 dead and a million homeless.  Before 1979 coffee production was at 1 million bags (150 lbs each).  By 1990 production had fallen to 600,000 bags.  Fortunately, as political stability has improved, so has the Nicaraguan coffee industry.  Coffee farmers who endured the many years of

political turmoil can now focus on coffee since the coffee industry is no longer under government control.  Every year Nicaragua becomes a stronger player in the specialty coffee trade.  Socially and ecologically responsible farming is on the rise in Nicaragua with more coffees being certified organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance.  The finest coffees come from the Matagalpa, Jinotega and Nuevo Segovia regions.   While the country has seen success in recent years there is always a looming threat to their industry, not from man but from nature.  Each summer Nicaragua must worry about the threats posed by hurricanes traversing through the Atlantic and Caribbean.

Our current selection from Nicaragua, Selva Negra Estate is also a Rainforest Alliance certified coffee!  It's full bodied but nicely balanced with acidity.  Flavors range from nutty to chocolate.
